If you are planning to carve with us at the Senior Center in one of my classes you will need some basic items.
A cut resistant glove for your hand that will be holding the block of wood you will be carving. There are different kinds of gloves. If you buy from Amazon look for a glove with a cut resistant rating of at least 5. They are rated up to a 9.
A fixed blade carving knife would be the first tool needed. I do have some loaners. If you are a beginner don't purchase tools, knives and gouges, without speeking to an experienced carver first. You would be better off purchasing a couple better tools than an inexpensve carving set. With carving tools you really do get what you pay for.
Gouges are handy, if you have some bring them along but don't go out and buy them for your first class.
Finally, come with a positive attitude. If this is the first time you ever carved there will be a learning curve. You will not be left alone to figure it out. Between myself and other carvers we will coach you along. My Father always said "all carvings are good, some are better". So keep that in mind if you give this a try.
Stop in on a Tuesday morning 9:00 to 11 ish. There is open carving in the Woodcarving Club, see what the hobby is all about or feel free to email me, Bill Scudder at scuddeb@gmail.com .
